Terms of use
By using OnTrace, you accept these rules. They are written to be read: if something is unclear, write to us.

This is a translation for convenience. The French version of this text is the one that applies, and prevails in case of any difference.
What OnTrace is
OnTrace is a free service that places water points, huts, supplies and other useful places along a GPX track, to prepare a route. It lets you share a trace with other people, comment on it, and report the state of a place.
Looking for places on a trace needs no account. Sharing, commenting and posting a review do.
What the service does not guarantee
OnTrace helps you prepare, it is not a safety guide. Places come from open databases and contributions from the public. They may be missing, moved, closed or wrong, and the state shown for a water point or a hut may no longer be true. Opening hours are the ones contributors entered, without public holidays.
You alone are responsible for your outing: check on site, find out about the weather and conditions, carry what you need to be self-sufficient in water, food and first aid, and adapt your route. The reliability level shown on a place sums up reports, it proves nothing.
Your account
- You give an e-mail address you use, and choose a username freely.
- You are responsible for your password and for what is done with your account. Tell us if you think someone else used it.
- The service is meant for people aged 15 and over. One account per person.
- You can delete your account at any time from “My profile”. We can suspend or close an account that breaks these rules, and explain why (see moderation).
What you post
You post public reviews of places (visible to everyone, under your username), group comments (visible to the people who have the group’s link) and shared traces. You remain their author and are responsible for them.
By posting, you commit to your content being:
- accurate, and written in good faith, from what you saw or knew
- free of anything illegal: insult, threat, discrimination, hatred, harassment, content against the law
- free of advertising, soliciting or commercial links unrelated to the place
- free of information about other people (name, phone, address, photo) without their consent
- respectful of the rights of others, copyright in particular
You grant OnTrace a free, non-exclusive license, limited to the time of publication, to show, store and reproduce your content in the service, for the sole purpose of running it. You can remove your reviews at any time. We do not sell your content.
Moderation
Public reviews and flagged comments are examined by a moderation team. Content that breaks the rules can be hidden and an account suspended. You are told, with the reason, and you can appeal the decision. Everything is explained on the moderation page. To report a content, use the “Report” button or the Report content page.
Intellectual property
The site, its name, its logo and its code belong to its publisher. Data on places and maps belong to their sources and follow their licenses (OpenStreetMap: ODbL, refuges.info, OpenTopoMap, IGN, Wikimedia Commons, Mapillary), listed in the legal notice. You may use OnTrace for personal or association use. Copying the site’s data in bulk or presenting it as your own is not allowed.
Your data
What we do with your data is explained in the privacy policy and the cookie policy.
Availability
We do our best to keep the site running, but it may be interrupted, and data sources may be unavailable: the app tells you when an area could not be loaded. No level of availability is guaranteed for the free offer.
Liability
To the extent the law allows, the publisher is not liable for damage resulting from a decision made from the site’s information, from content posted by users, or from the service being unavailable. Nothing in these terms limits the rights the law grants you, nor the publisher’s liability in case of gross negligence or bodily injury.
Professional offer
The Pro offer is not sold online. It follows a discussion, then a written agreement whose specific terms prevail over this text for what they cover.
Changes
These terms may change. The date of the last update is at the top of the page, and a significant change is announced in the app. Continuing to use OnTrace after a change means accepting it, unless the law requires your express consent.
Contact and governing law
For any question: contact@ontrace.xyz. These terms are governed by French law. In case of dispute, we first look for an amicable solution. Failing that, the French courts have jurisdiction, subject to the mandatory rules that protect consumers.
